This scene shows Galatea, who, in Greek mythology, was a sea nymph and daughter of Nereus and Doris, on the back of a Triton, a messenger of the sea and the son of Poseidon, god of the sea. Triton was said to have the body of a man and the tail of the fish. With them are other sea nymphs and above them Hermes, the messenger god with wings on his feet.
