Many florists lay a great deal of stress on newspapers, more on direct- mail advertising, while others make large use of car cards and signboards, all of which have their ; In explanation of the policy of his own firm, Mr. Penn said: "Being believers in continuous ad- vertising, we have certain advertise- ments running every day in the year, including Sundays and holidays, in sev- eral papers, and their positions in the various newspapers have become a fix- ture. Next in importance in our news- paper, advertising is our weekly spe- cial feature advertisement, at all times with a cut representing the commodity we wish to advertise. Some of these bear prices; othe'rs are merely general publicity advertisements. We run these in several newspapers during the week, but vary the days in which they appear, believing thereby we get greater circulation than we do by run- ning the same advertisement in several papers the same day. This is quite an important suggestion and helps mate- rially in getting greater results. Ciunulative Effect. "We have for over fifteen years, without a day^ interruption, had our lithographed cards running in the cars of Boston and greater Boston. We have had also painted signboards on highways near the street car routes on which our cards are run, giving us an unusual cumulative value. For in- stance, a patron may see our adver- tisement in the newspaper; then, when entering the street car, look up and see a Penn car card, and, while uncon- sciously looking out of the car window, gaze upon a Penn hand-painted sign- board. This succession is surely cumu- lative, to eay the least, and the effect, resultful. "The returns from advertising in this manner are decidedly strong, as the contact is threefold, and our faith is stronger than ever towards its continu- ance. &
