This is a photograph of the Bear skull alongside the Giant Deer or 'Megaloceros' bone with the Neanderthal engravings. These bones were first found by Gabriele Russo, who is a MSc student from the University of Tuebingen, Germany. They were found together in the sediment fill at the excavation site just outside Unicorn Cave, near Scharzfeld, Harz Mountains. We used a combinaton of daylight flash or strobe lighting and slowly increased the power of a warm LED panel to recreate the light of a glowing fire. This position and orientation of the bone is exactly how the archeologists have been showing and describing the artifact. These photographs were taken in Hannover at the Lower Saxony State Office for Heritage.
