Monument to Exercise Tiger during the Normandy Landings in 1944 with Sherman Tank (detail), Torcross, Devon, England, UK

Exercise Tiger (also known as Operation Tiger) was a full-scale rehearsal carried out around the Slapton Sands area, for the D-Day invasion of Normandy beaches. During the exercise many of the surrounding villages and farms were evacuated. Slapton Sands and Slapton Ley beyond it were selected due to their similarity with Utah Beach. The exercises were carried out during April and May 1944. The exercises encountered a number of severe problems including enemy fire from German E-Boats and a total of 638 servicemen lost their lives. This Sherman tank was recovered from the sea at Torcross and for many years was the only monument to the men who lost their lives.
