Pysche. Pysche was so beautiful that Venus was jealous and sent her son Cupid to punish the damsel. Cupid fell in love instead, and helped Pysche through all the attacks of his mother. At one time, Venus sent her to Hades, the abode of the dead, to bring back a box. Pysche had strict orders not to open the box; so of course she did, and a vapor rose from it which nearly killed her. The picture shows her hesitant, about to peep in the box, while from behind, Cerberus, the three-headed watch-dog of Hades, croaks a harsh warning to her.
