Important Gentoo penguin colony on Culverville Island off the Western side of the Antarctic Peninsula

Culverville Island is off the Western side of the Antarctic Peninsula and is one of Antarctica's 10 most visited sights. Discovered by de Gerlache in 1897-98 it was named for de Culverville, a vice admiral in the French Navy and has several large Gentoo penguin colonies which together make up one of the largest groups of the species in the are also deep and fragile beds of Antarctic Mosses and lichens.
