Spiny goby scale. Light micrograph of a section through a scale from a spiny goby (Pseudapocryptes lanceolatus). This is a cycloid fish scale. The spiny goby has thin cycloid scales covering its body, which are anchored in pouches in the dermis (lower skin). Fish have an outside skeleton of scales and made of dentine. As the scales grow layers of dentine each year, the age of the fish can be determined by counting the growth rings (concentric lines). Magnification: x7, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
