Spinning top conebush seed. Seed of the spinning top conebush, (Leucadendron album). This is a silvery evergreen shrub endemic to South Africa, and found amongst fynbos vegetation. The male plant has small flowers and the female has large, cone-like flower-heads which form woody seed heads containing numerous seeds with silky-haired parachutes, enabling the seeds to be dispersed by wind. The cones are fire-proof and release the seeds only after a fire has killed part or all of the plant.
