Guy Fawkes (1570–1606), was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. When discovered he admitted his intention to blow up the House of Lords, and expressed regret at his failure to do so and immediately taken to the palace where his steadfast manner earned him the admiration of King James I, who described Fawkes as possessing "a Roman resolution". James's admiration did not, however, prevent him from ordering on 6 November that "John Johnson" be tortured, to reveal the names of his co-conspirators.
