A reflection of Austro-Italian history ... the colourful Casa or Casetta del Dazio, an early-18th century former Austrian Empire frontier toll house or customs post at the entrance to the harbour of the small Lake Garda port of Torbole sul Garda, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy.

Torbole sul Garda, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: the yellow ochre facade of the Casa or Casetta del Dazio, a former quayside Austrian customs post or toll house, contrasts with the dark water filling the small harbour of this former frontier port near the northern tip of the Lago di Garda. The early-18th century Casa del Dazio stands alone on the quay at the harbour entrance. It was built by Vienna in the early 1700s to deter smuggling and to levy tolls or customs duties on goods crossing the new border. It lost its role when the Austro-Hungarian Empire was dissolved after its defeat in the 1914-18 First World War, with Torbole reverting to the Kingdom of Italy. More recently, the Casa del Dazio has been carefully restored by its present owners, the Tonelli Hotels group, and is now open to visitors.
