Fly's proboscis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of the proboscis (snout) of an unidentified fly (order Diptera). Flies possess mouthparts adapted for piercing and sucking. Most feed on plant juices or suck the blood of mammals. The tip of the proboscis in some flies has two spongy labella (seen here), used for soaking up liquids. Magnification: x63 at 6x7cm size.
