Then there are all sorts of otherinsects, and their ways and habits are asinteresting as those of the moths andbutterflies. The yellow-banded and thered-tailed bumble-bees are regular honey-making bees, but they only live in smallnumbers, and their cells are not soclev^erly constructed ; and instead ofstoring up their honey they eat it as fastas they make it. After their long wintersleep, those which are left alive wake upone warm spring day and go buzz-buzzalong the fields, poking their heads intoall sorts of holes and corners, looking fora nice convenient hole in which to maketheir nests. Perhaps they choose an oldmouse-hole or other small hollow in theground, or hedge-bank, where they make48. Hedgerow Life a small nest of moss. And in this theeggs are first laid, and later on, as theyincrease in numbers, the round cells ofbrown wax are stored. The bumble-bees visit the flowers for their honeymost industriously, and seem to beparticularly fond of thistles. On the bigpurple thistle-heads they sit in a drowsyfashion, as if half stupefied. Clover alsohas a great attraction for them, and theyappear to be especially fitted for fertilizingthe flowers of that plant.
