Southampton,Hampshire Saturday 12th March 2016 Emergency services rushed to the scene of what is being described as a man-made river gushing down a Southampton Street this morning after a major water main burst. Two Fire crews from Hightown fire station and the Water Support and a Landrover from Fareham were called to Stainer Way in Hedge End Southampton just after 10am this morning. Fire crews were greeted with four-foot of dirty water that had flooded 17 homes in four roads. One pensioner has to be rescued from a window using a fire and rescue service boat after being cut off in her home. A Cordon was put in place and specialist Haz Mat officers from Hampshire fire and rescue were called in after contaminated water and mud floated through the Hedge End housing estate. Seventeen Homes in Stainer Way, Mallard Gardens and Old Shamblehurst Lane were affected after the main gusted down the residential street. Power has been isolated to the effected home as has the water. Seventy thousand other homes have also been effected as the main had to be shut off. Station commander Nigel Cooper from St Marys Fire and Rescue Service said "The water was deep in areas It was like a flowing river when crews first arrived. I would have said it was must have been about four-foot deep in places. " Fire crews using portable pumps and the fire appliances have spent the morning pumping out homes that where knee-deep in water. Fire crews managed to stop the water from flooding a sub station that supply approx 20,000 homes in the area. Power has been isolated to the effected home as has the water. Contractors from Southern Water have also been on site. They have shut off the water main and are attempting to carry out repairs that has left a gaping hole between the pavement and the ©UKNIP
