When the decades-old prayer rugs were replaced in the Selimiye Mosque in the heart of the Turkish Cypriot part of Nicosia, many relief panels from the Middle Ages were briefly revealed. Built in the 13th century as St. Sophia Cathedral by Franconian crusaders, the church was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1571.
