WHEEL OF FORTUNE Detail of a Wheel of Fortune, said (in 1524) to be copies of a design on an old tapestry found in the castle at Michelfeldt (on the Rhine). This detail shows Time (marked Zeit) turning the Wheel of Fortune, aided by a fox (Fuchs). The named birds include (bottom) a Peacock, a Falcon, a Magpie, a Pheasant and an Eagle. The significance of this cycle of birds is not known, but it could be that they refer to heraldic devices, and therefore have a personal meaning. The print is sometimes wrongly attributed to the German artist, Albrecht D³rer.
