Illuminated Winged Sycamore Seeds

The Sycamore tree is pollinated mainly by bees which results in the fruit producing a two-winged structure with each wing containing a seed. Often called helicopters this double-wing spins through the air, enabling the seeds to be carried some distance from the parent tree. Once they have spun to the ground they lie in wait for warm spring days in which to germinate. This is when a fresh root digs into the earth and lifts the seedcase up to catch the sun. This then acts as a heat sink, helping the new growth to develop.
