Common cold. Young girl coughs into her hand suffering from a cold or influenza. She is dressed warmly in a woolen cap and scarf. Inflammation of the upper respiratory tract due to viral infection in colds or influenza may lead to coughing. The coughing reflex acts to clear the airways of excess mucus secretion, sputum (phlegm), or foreign irritants and blockages. Bronchitis, the inflammation of air passages into the lungs, may also result in severe coughing.
