Columns of the Temple of Apollo, Didim, Turkey
The beautifully preserved ruins of the Temple of Apollo are at the end of the, 'Sacred Road' that stretches from the nearby ruined city of Miletos. An oracle considered to be only second to the oracle at Delphi in Greece, resided there. Alexander the Great freed the area from the rule of the Persians at the end of the 4th century BC. The ruins are fascinating and compelling giving an aura of the greatness associated with this temple, a sense of awe at the sheer scale of it. In 395 AD the Roman emperor prohibited oracles and soothsayers. Christianity arrived soon after and the temple was converted to a church. It is understood that most of the temple was still standing in the 15th century but was devastated in an earthquake in 1493.
