Skin cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a malignant (cancerous) nodular melanoma of the skin. This cancer arises from the skin's melanocytes, the cells that produce the pigment (melanin) that give skin its colour. Nodular melanoma is the most aggressive form and tends to grow more rapidly in thickness (penetrating the skin) than in diameter. Melanomas often spread (metastasis) to other tissues and the prognosis is poor. Magnificaition: x40 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Human tissue.
