Hydrogen gas production plant. 19th-century illustration of the 1867 large-scale hydrogen gas production plant of French engineer and balloonist Henri Giffard. The wooden barrels contain sulphuric acid reacting with iron to produce hydrogen gas that passes along tubes to be washed (vessel at lower centre), then dried (lower left), and finally checked for temperature and dryness (bottom left). One cubic metre of hydrogen is made from 3kg of iron and 5kg of sulphuric acid.
