This Rowbotham Sidcup Endotracheal Apparatus was introduced in 1921. It was designed to deliver a continuous and controllable flow of anaesthetic vapour, such as ether or chloroform, to the patient during surgery. The anaesthetic was delivered into the patient's trachea via a tube, allowing facial surgery to be performed. It was designed by Edgar Stanley Rowbotham (1890-1979), an anaesthetist famous for his part in much of the innovation and development in modern anaesthesia.
