The 1906 caption reads: “Baptism of Clovis.—Clovis, a chieftain of the heathen Franks, conquered the Roman land of Gaul and named it France. He married a Christian wife [Clotilde], and was finally persuaded by her to adopt her faith and submit to baptism. We see the ceremony as it was performed in the ancient cathedral at Rheims by Bishop Remigius. The barbaric warriors of Clovis gather round in amaze[ment]; the shaggy chief himself kneels half unwillingly, while above him towers the Christian bishop, summoning him to a new life.”
