Ceremonial trumpet in C. William Bull was the most important trumpet maker in the late 1600s. Only four of his instruments, however, are known to survive. This one was probably spared because it is a particularly splendid instrument. The use of silver and the rich ornament suggest that it was made for playing on royal or official occasions. The oldest surviving trumpets were found in the tomb of Tutankhamen. Both Celts and Romans carried trumpets into battle.
