USA/UK: 'La Princesse du Pay de la Porcelaine' (The Princess from the Land of Porcelain). Orientalist oil on canvas painting by James McNeill Whistler (10 July 1834 - 17 July 1903), 1863-1865. James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American-born, British-based artist. Averse to sentimentality and moral allusion in painting, he was a leading proponent of the credo 'art for art's sake'. His famous signature for his paintings was in the shape of a stylised butterfly possessing a long stinger for a tail.
