St Mary le Bow, church in the City of London, by Christopher Wren, 1670s dragon weathervane


St Mary le Bow, church in the City of Londoon, rebuilt after the Great Fire of London (1666) by Christopher Wren, 1670-1680. The weathervane, a gilt dragon almost 9 feet in length, symbol of the City of London, with a red cross on its wings representing the Arms of the City. Model carved by Edward Pearce (or Pierce), made in copper by Robert Bird. On the day the dragon was finally installed a famous tightrope walker called Jacob Hall climbed on its back, to the delight of the crowds below.
