Original WW1 era postcard studio portrait of First World War Red Cross volunteer or VAD as they were known. He name was Charlie and he looks very weary possibly having seen too much at the Front. He is holding a riding crop which could mean he worked with horses to bring back the wounded from the trenches. From Ye Olde Guildhall Studio, 29 St. Thomas St. Winchester 1914-1918.

Pulling ambulances was one of the most important roles of draught horses. They could quickly transport injured soldiers from casualty clearing stations to field hospitals. Along badly shell-damaged roads, it would have been a very uncomfortable way to travel. Source: National Army Museum. "With love from Charlie " is written on the reverse of this postcard.
