Seeds are dispersed from a bright orange female seed cone that is nestled in the heart of a tropical Cycad plant (Encephalartos ferox] on Casey Key in southwest Florida, USA. These beautiful rare plants have been called "living fossils" because they have existed for more 200 million years -- even before dinosaurs roamed the earth. Once abundant across the globe, only about 250 cycad species exist today. This variety surrounds and protects its reproductive seed cone with barbed evergreen leaves.
