A large fallen tree lies on its side in Dorset Gardens opposite Amex House, home of American Express (the building would be demolished in 2017). 'The Great Storm' of 1987 was a violent tropical cyclone, with hurricane-force winds causing casualties and great damage in the UK, France and the Channel Islands when a severe depression in the Bay of Biscay moved northeast. Forests, parks, roads and railways were strewn with fallen trees. Power lines came down causing extensive electricity blackouts. Many buildings were damaged. At least 22 people were killed in England and France. As a result of this storm, major improvements were made in atmospheric observation and computer modelling. This image is from an old amateur Agfachrome colour transparency taken in poor, late-afternoon light conditions. It will look grainy and soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1980s photograph.
