Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Prosthecobacter fusiformis, prosthecate, prokaryote (bacterium). Unusual aquatic bacterium that is heterotrophic and belongs to a new division of bacteria called Verrucomicobia. Found also in solid environments they comprise up to 3% of the microbiota of soil. Some species have bacterial tubulin genes. Prosthecobacter attaches by a holdfast at the tip of its prosthecate to algae and sheathed bacteria. Its life cycle resembles that of Caulobacter sp. but has no motile stage. Magnification: x3,400 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
