Grizzly bears, as they are commonly known, are found in most of Alaska from the islands of the Southeast to the Arctic. Over 98 percent of the brown bear population resides in Alaska. The coastal brown bear is the world’s largest carnivorous land mammal. Nearly 45,000 brown bears (Ursus arctos), roam Alaska, weigh up to 1,100 pounds. Salmon is their primary food source.
