An 1852 drawing described as an" Indian 'squaw' and her children" in California. By this time, many of those that had not been massacred or displaced were becoming westernised and were wearing western clothing. Though widely used the term squaw is today generally construed as offensive, derogatory, misogynist and racist by indigenous inhabitants.
