Eastern (or "red-spotted") newt Notophthalmus viridescens juvenile in red eft stage


The red eft is brightly colored with orange-red. The bright coloration colouration is a warning to predators that the newt secretes a toxic chemical from its skin. This is known as aposematic coloration
