When I commenced the preparation of this Story of anEarnest Life, I intended to dedicate it to my friend, LymanTrumbull, then living. We met first in December, 1839. He was at that time alawyer, and lived in Belleville; I was a law student, and camefrom Carlinville to Springfield, where the Supreme Court wasin session, to obtain admission to the bar.
