My business to day was to change it.) Talk and cigar with [Charles] Nordhoff, [John] Bonner busy as usual, on Mondays ? going-to-press day. Saw him for a few minutes. To Pic Office. Return. Phonography. Wrote to George Bolton in the afternoon. Phonography and overhauling story at night. A good day's work. Out with Rawson [Gill] and [William] Leslie to Honey's for a rarebit and ale. [Frank] Cahill was there at the centre table with [John] Darcy, [Frederick] Watson, Hawthorne and [Adolphus] Davenport, the actor. 20. Tuesday. Rain. Harpers', Pic and Post Office &c. Return up town by 12. Found Cahill at Honey ?s, in company with Watson. The latter is a very short man, even to diminutiveess, has a most unhealthy town-bred pallor of complexion, a rather longish chin, and is altogether a most unpleasant looking little scrub. Phonography & chores ? plenty of 'em. 21. Wednesday. Drawing on wood. Phonography &c Down town at 5 1/2, the rain leaving off and sun coming out. [Frank] Leslie's, Pick & Ross & Tousey's. At night to Lexington Avenue in compliance with a note from Mrs [Mary] Levison, which I got yesterday stating that she 'needed the advise of a disinterested friend.' Found her in a neatly furnished back parlor, with her younger sister. Let her talk. T'was all about 'Nic-nax' with discursive remarks on the Picayune. The woman is full of mean suspicions of [Jesse] Haney. When The 'Nic-nax' was started [William] Levison furnished capital, and undertook for his share of the labor the business part, buying paper, seeing to printing, keeping books &c, while Haney agreed to devote his whole time to the editorship.
