View W of the lychgate with upper room at St Clement's Church, St Clement, Cornwall, England, UK, taken in October 1990 before being restored in 2004-08. The original lychgate of 1733 was refurbished in 1822 when the upper floor was rebuilt. Shale rubble ground floor with a slate hung first floor & slate roof. The passage has an adjoining basement, it is cobbled on the churchyard side & has a filled in Cornish stile (cattle grid of long granite slabs) on the village side. The upper room, accessed by external steps at the N, has two early C19th Gothick windows of paired pointed lights in pointed arched openings. The upper floor has been used as a Parish Room & vestry, the village school & Sunday school, & a rates office. The ground floor was used as a pigsty 1840-72. Since the 2004-08 restoration by the Friends of St Clement Lychgate the upper room has been used for arts & crafts exhibitions. The C19th headstone is in memory of Grace Cox, wife of Thomas Hickes, aged 45.
