An early printed photograph of an early British steam-powered experimental machine for catapulting aircraft into the air. Germany first used seaplane steam engines to launch their Dornier Do J mail planes on their South Atlantic Air Mail service in 1933. Modern British invented steam catapults to launch aircraft air was suggested by Commander Colin C. Mitchell RNVR. Soon trials took place on HMS Perseus in 1950 . Pilots included Eric "Winkle" Navies introduced steam catapults for jet fighters soon after.
