French nobleman Simon de Montfort at the siege of Toulouse was killed on June 25, 1218, by a catapulted stone.


French nobleman Simon de Montfort (1160-1218), the 5th earl of Leicester, took part in the Fourth Crusade and was a leader in the Albigensian Crusade. With his troops, Simon lay siege to Toulouse. After battling for nine months, Simon was killed on June 25, 1218, when his head was smashed with a catapulted stone, as pictured in this illustration dating to around 1900.
