Passing an array of vegetation types, the South Coast Track meanders through several patches of temperate myrtle rainforests. Tasmania hosts the largest tracts of temperate rainforest in the world, forests that include many species native only to the island. Tracing the rugged coastline of Tasmania's most southern tip, the South Coast Track is renowned as one of the world's greatest wilderness walks. Spanning 83 kilometers over seven days, it sits in a World Heritage area, land internationally protected for its significant ecological value. Tasmania's wilderness is currently under threat, menaced by a voracious woodchipping industry and the clear felling of old growth temperate rainforest species, many thousands of years old and unique to Tasmania. It is deemed as an impending ecological catastrophe.
