Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Sphingobacterium psychroaquaticum is a Gram negative, rod-shaped bacterium recently discovered (phylum Bacteriodetes). It was isolated from Lake Michigan (USA). S. psychroaquaticum contains sphingolipids which are unique polar lipids based upon the amino acid serine and not glycerol. Other characteristics include the ability to grow at cold temperatures (psychotropic) and the production of a non-capsular extracellular material. Magnification: x5,335 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
