View of the Casino in Bad Ems, Germany.

One part of the Kursaal building, which was erected at the same time as the spa theatre, forms today’s casino. At that time it was the “little concert hall”. Since 1987 it has been accommodating the casino. Before that time people gambled in the marble hall. As gambling was not compatible anymore with a bathing resort for an emperor and the Prussian ideals of that time, the first casino of Bad Ems – Germany’s oldest casino with a concession – was closed in 1872. In 1987 it was reopened and belongs to the casinos in Mainz and Trier today. Next to the classic games of chance – Roulette and Black Jack – there is a gambling machine hall with 35 slot machines. Very popular is the “Casino leger” (“Casino Casual”) introduced three years ago, where there is no obligation to wear ties or to keep to strict dress regulations. Gambling, by the way, is not mandatory. Whoever is in the mood to do so can take a seat at the bar, can watch people and enjoy champagne.
