This painting by Fitz Henry Lane was done around 1850. The notes at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland note "Mary Mellen served as the artist’s apprentice, copying his works as exercises, and eventually working with Lane on canvases based on earlier paintings, including this view of the town on Mount Dessert, which Lane visited with his friend, Joseph Stevens, Jr." Fitz Henry Lane (1804 – 1865) was an American painter and printmaker of a style that would later be called Luminism.
