Somethingof the bloodshed on the battlefield ofGettysburg may be understood whenit is considered that the battlefield,which covered nearly twenty-fivesquare miles, was literally strewn withdead bodies, many of them mutilatedeven worse than the one in this pic-ture. The surviving veterans of Get-tysburg have seen wars most horribleaspects. Gallant and daring com-manders led those brave men in thatthree days inferno, from the firstto the third of July, in 1863.
