RAF Douglas C-47 Dakotas being unloaded at Berlin Tegel airport during the Berlin Airlift. In response escalating tensions and to the establishment new West German currency, the Soviets cut off all land communications to West Berlin and stopped sending food there. TheAllied response was an eleven month campaign to supply W Berlin with the 5000 tons per day of food and fuel it needed. A plane landed every three minutes day and night and the operation was so succesful that the Soviets had to back down and reopen the roads, railways and canals.
