A woman in a doctor's office is undergoing an electroencephalogram (EEG) that detects abnormalities in the electrical activity of her brain and is used to evaluate a variety of brain disorders. Small metal discs with thin wires are pasted on the scalp and these electrodes detect tiny electrical charges that result from the activity of the brain cells. The charges appear as a graph on a computer screen and are recorded on paper for doctors to read and interpret. The test causes no discomfort because the electrodes do not produce any sensation and there is no risk of getting an electric shock.
