Book allegory. 15th-century manuscript illustration produced for a Middle English translation of the 14th-century French poem 'Pilgrimage of the Life of Man' by Guillaume de Guileville. Lady Hagiography (centre) is showing the Pilgrim (the narrator of the poem) and Lady Lesson (left) into a room full of books on reading shelves. The allegorical message is that the books are tomes of wisdom for the pilgrim to acquire learning.
