I CHING - TRIGRAMS A double page spread from an 18th century block-book version of the Book of Changes, or I Ching. The two diagrams on these pages represent the most ancient diagrams depicting the order of the eight trigrams, and their cosmic equivalents. The arrangement to the right (the first page in the Chinese system) illustrates the arrangement as set out by King Wen. This visualizes the South at the top, with the warm and brilliant trigram Li. The arrangement to the left (the second page in the Chinese sequence) represents the cosmic harmony of the four primal trigrams that symbolise Heaven, Earth, Sun and Moon. These cosmic powers are represented in the circlets to the left - at the top is Heaven, at the bottom Earth, to the extreme left, the Sun, and to the right, the Moon. These cosmic forces find their trigrammatic equivalents in the circlets to the right. The Heavens are represented by the trigram Chien, the Earth by the trigram Kun, the Sun by the trigram Li, and the Moon by the trigram K'an.
