Beginning of Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). An old Bohemian method by which the people more than once avenged themselves on unpopular ministers was to throw victims from a high window. Most famous of all these Defenestrations was the one shown here, which started the terrible Thirty Years War. The hated councillors, Slavata and Martinitz (also spelled Martinic), were hurled from the window of the council hall and fell eighty feet to the palace ditch. Luckily they landed on a heap of rubbish and thus escaped death. The Thirty Years War began as a religious war, fought between Roman Catholics and Protestants in Germany. It developed into a political struggle between the Catholic Habsburgs of the Holy Roman Empire (Austria, most of the German princes and occasionally Spain).
