Sanguisorbia menziesii (Burnet), May, UK

Plant portrait, Sanguisorba menziesii (Burnet). An attractive and clump forming hardy, herbaceous perennial that associates well with ornamental grasses. Delicate, glaucous, scalloped-edged foliage emerges in early spring, followed by tall stems of dense, crimson-maroon, oval shaped flower spikes that attract bees and hoverflies. Tolerates sun, but prefers soil that does not dry out. Seedheads retain their colour, remaining attractive, retaining winter interest. Close up of fresh crimson-maroon flower spikes, Totnes, Devon, United KIngdom. May. Excellent companion to Nepeta (Cat Mint), as seen here, perennial Astrantias, hardy Geraniums and spiky Eryngiums.
