A male Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris) rises from ground, open the mouth and roars at Piedras Plancas Elephant Seal Rockery.

A male elephant seal can weight 1300-2200kg (300-5000 pounds) and can be 4-5m (14-16ft) long. They can dive up to 2 hours but normally "only" 20-30 minutes. They can reach a depth of almost 1800 meters (6000 feet) but they are mostly diving to a depth of 300-600 meters (1000-2000 feet). They eat a variety of prey, including pelagic, deep-water squid, Pacific hake, sharks, rays, and ratfish.
