Boer War - A early painting of the Dead Wood or Deadwood POW Camp, on Deadwood Plain,on the island of St It was the first overseas camp to be set up and housed 5000 prisoners . During the South African War of 1899 to 1902 the British took as many as 20 000 prisoners of war resulting in overcrowded prisoner of war camps in South Africa. Because they were easily attacked they commenced shipping prisoners to Bermuda, India, Portugal, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and the island of St Helena. The tents were later replaced by huts
